How to Deal With Bullying

     Bullying often involves three people.
Where do you fit in?

The Kid Who Gets Bullied

If you get teased or picked on, maybe you think there's nothing you can do. But that's not true. Here are some things you can try:

  • Avoid the bully. Try to stay away if you can.
  • Ignore the bully. Don't cry or yell back. If you don't react, the bully may just give up.
  • Walk away. This is the thing to do if you are in danger.
  • Talk to the bully. Say how you feel without using putdowns or insults. Try to pick a place where you'll feel safe.
  • Stand up to the bully. Get together with a few friends and as a group, tell the bully that you don't like what's happening, but talk-never use violence.
  • Tell an adult. Get help from a grown-up you trust.

The Kid Who Bullies

Why do some kids bully other kids?

  • They like to be in control.
  • They like to be the center of attention.
  • They may have been bullied themselves.

If you bully other kids, if you tease them or push them around, ask yourself, "how would I like it if someone did that to me?" If you wouldn't like, it, then probably the other kids wouldn't like it either.

The Kid Who Sees Bullying Happen

Chances are you've seen someone being bullied. Figuring out what to do, or if you should do anything can be tricky. Here are some things you should know:

  • Don't laugh. Bullies love attention. If you laugh you'll only encourage the bully to do more.
  • Speak up. Let the bully know that you don't like what's going on.
  • Tell an adult. Report what's happening.
  • Be careful. Bullies can be dangerous. If you're afraid, don't stand up to the bully by yourself.

If the bully is your friend,
ask yourself...
"Is this the kind of friend I want to have?"
