| What is
Accelerated Reader (A.R) ? |
| |
Accelerated Reader
is a reading software program that was created to
motivate reluctant readers. Not surprisingly, it has
turned into an instrument that challenges all
students to increase the number of books they read
which impacts the quality and enjoyment of their
reading experience as well as their reading skills. The Accelerated Reader
program challenges all readers – from the novice to
the most advanced bookworms - to read more quality
literature at their own level. Our library
circulation is skyrocketing since the introduction
of Accelerated Reader and we know that our
children’s literacy and learning power will multiply
as a result.
The program is not a replacement for direct
instruction in reading. Instead, the program is a
supplement designed to increase students’ practice
in daily reading. The ultimate goal of the A.R.
Program is to make students "Life Long Readers!" |

How
Accelerated Reader Works |
|
|
Testing for Reading
Level: Students initial experience with the
program is to take a “STAR Test”. This test will be
given once each semester and is designed to identify
a student’s range of independent reading.
Book Selection: The independent reading level
indicated by the STAR Test is listed in grade level
format and helps to guide a student’s choice of
books. The target is to find material that is not
too easy or too frustrating. Books in Joe Hall
Elementary's Library are labeled by AR reading level
so that students can select books that qualify for
the program. Students and teachers can also refer
to a master list of book titles sorted by reading
level, author or title. While the A.R. Website
has over 200,000 titles, our local school has
quizzes that correlate with our book collection
which is always increasing. Many of
these titles are also available in Public Libraries.
Reading Within the Range: Students are
expected to read within their range, however the
teacher is the final judge and can make exceptions
for reading outside of the student’s level.
Goal Setting: Teachers work with students
individually to set an Accelerated Reader goal. The
quizzes are designed to see that students have read
and understood the books.
Quizzes: Students take an A.R. quiz at
school after
each book is completed. Joe Hall Elementary
provides access to the AR quizzes from any school
computer. A list of our A.R. quizzes are available
online. See below for more details. |
