Inauguration

Joe Hall Elementary School opened its doors in
1986 by the principal, Mrs. Barbara Bell. It was dedicated on March 11, 1987 and the school was named after Dr. Josiah Calvin Hall, Jr. Dr. Hall served the Dade County Public Schools as superintendent of schools from 1957 to 1968. His major accomplishments included the successful integration of the school system, accommodating for the huge influx of Cuban refugee children and the implementation of bilingual education programs. His motto, "Learning to Live, Living to Learn" is carried out by students of Joe Hall Elementary.

Population

The school population is 767.
Ninety-three percent of the students are "Hispanic", four percent are "White", one percent is "Black", and two percent is "Other". Our Exceptional Student Education program targets the specific needs of our school community. It includes programs for autism, learning disabilities, and the gifted. The school has a mandatory school uniform policy.

Pedagogy

Joe Hall Elementary provides comprehensive
services based on the Sunshine State Standards to students in grades pre-kindergarten to five. Additionally, the school has eight self-contained and four resource Exceptional Student Education classrooms which serve children with autism, learning disabilities, and gifted characteristics. Instruction is provided in traditional classroom settings and is enhanced through computer based activities in all grades through local and wide area networks.

Curriculum

The instructional program is designed to
prepare our students to meet world class standards. Emphasis is on quality and continuous improvement. The curriculum is designed both to provide the necessary skills to be a successful lifelong learner and also to provide opportunities to demonstrate the knowledge acquired. Learning to work cooperatively as a member of a group is an important part of our program. All areas of the curriculum are designed to develop creative and critical thinking abilities. Emphasis is on problem solving, application of knowledge and understanding the role of technology. All classrooms have multiple computers. Students and teachers use the computers as part of the curriculum. The school opened up its first three autistic units under the auspices of Dr. Winston Whyte in 1998. Art, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish are included as part of the basic program. Special programs are available for ESOL students and Exceptional Education students, including gifted. Teachers work in instructional teams and block scheduling with common planning time which allows them to provide a uniform, integrated curriculum.

On the FCAT Reading: 87% of our students met high standards.
